After unionizing in 2022 and exercising extraordinary collective strength in securing an amazing first contract, SWCD is now engaged in very difficult bargaining for a second contract. Because they have negotiated for OPEN bargaining sessions, they are inviting student and community allies to show up to observe their bargaining session as a display of strong support for their bargaining positions. Our visible support is especially important because SWCD is facing an extremely hostile bargaining landscape (under a different college president than in 2023 and senior management that, seemingly, is fortified by anti-union sentiment and overt hostility toward student workers). SWCD is also bargaining vigorously for protections for international student workers in the current terrifying national climate and where, locally, at least two Dartmouth international student visas were discovered to have been revoked by U.S. Homeland Security with zero communication or due process.
